Materials of Construction
The most common material used for Hualai structured column packing
is SS 304L and SS 316L. However Hualai manufactures this solely based on our customers’
requirements and can also be made from other materials based on
special requests.
Uniform Liquid Distribution
In order to achieve even liquid distribution over the packing it is
a must to have a good liquid distributor to maximize the
interaction of the liquid and vapor. However if the packing height
exceeds 3 meters we recommend using an intermediate liquid
re-distributor as well for even flow.
Applications of metal structured packing:
- In ethylbenzene/styrene separation, after a sieve tray column was
revamped with corrugated orifice packing. Under the same overhead
operating pressure, the pressure of the reactor decreased from
32000 Pa (320 mbar) to 13500 Pa (135 mbar), and the pressure drop
decreased from 24700 Pa (247 mbar) to 6200 Pa (62 mbar), the
temperature of the reactor decreased from 104 to 83 degrees, and
the reflux ratio decreased from 9 to 6.5. The treatment capacity
increased from 16500 kg/h to 28300 kg/h (increased by 70%), the
degree of polymerization decreased from 0.5% to 0.1%, and the steam
required per ton of product decreased by 25%. The remarkable effect
of increasing production and saving energy was achieved.
- A 6500 t/a atmospheric distillation unit was revamped with orifice
corrugated packing for propylene oxide separation.
- Revamping of Lubricating Oil Vacuum Fractionation Tower, Replacing
Tower Plate with Orifice Plate Corrugated Packing and Cascade Mini
Ring.
- Gas oil vacuum distillation column uses corrugated orifice plate
structured packing instead of random packing.
- Replacing original plate tray with corrugated packing of orifice
plate in ethylene water quenching tower.
- Ethylene/ethane high pressure distillation column was reformed with
corrugated packing of orifice plate.
- Cyclohexanone / Cyclohexanol Separation Column with Regular Packing
with Corrugated Pore Plate
- DMT Separation Tower, uses Corrugated Plate structured packing
instead of Random Packing

Surface Treatments of Sheet Metal Structured Packing
It is important to achieve good contact between the liquid and
vapor phases. A packing that spreads the liquid evenly in a thin
film will exhibit beter performance. Mixing the film creates
turbulence that enhances the mass transfer.
Modifications to the texturing of the packing surface improve the
liquid spreading which, in turn, leads to enhanced packing
efficiency.
All types of Hualai structured packings are available in a variety
of corrugation sizes. This provides the versatility needed to
optimize a packing configuration to best meet the efficiency,
capacity, and pressure drop requirements for a particular
application.
